In the last twelve months I have spoken at around thirty festivals, book shops and literary events. Occasionally I attend these events with one or more of my children – often because of childcare issues, but sometimes because it looks like it’s going to be a fun trip.
Right now I’m on holiday with my family on the Isle of Cumbrae, a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland. As it also happens to be publication week for I SEE YOU, it seemed like a good time to do a Scottish event. Glasgow Waterstones kindly offered to host an exclusive launch for me, two days ahead of official publication date.
I took 8-year-old George along for the ride, but because there’s no such thing as a free lunch, I set some homework: a report of life as an author.
This is the result:
An Author’s Life: as seen by George, age 8
How do authors travel?
There are lots of different modes of transport when you’re away, including – aeroplanes, train, bus, taxi. Today we didn’t take an aeroplane, not a train not a tax not a bus but… a ferry.
p.s. the journey is kind of boring but here are some top tips to make it less boring.
Top tips!
-
bring a book
-
something to eat and drink
-
a toy or at least something to do
What are authors Hotel rooms like?
When I got there I was amazed at what I could see in front of my very eyes. The most amazing thing was having a fridge with loads and loads of drinks inside. It had a desk (which I’m working on) a toilet (very useful!) a bed (of course) and finally a nice Smart TV. Epic right?
What is authors room service like?
Room service is the best thing in the WORLD! You can order anything but sadly it’s not free 🙂 Also you get to eat on the bed which you probably don’t get to do at home.
What are authors events like?
Somtimes people come somtimes they don’t but really you have to smile and pretend you’re having fun. The best thing is people fuss you and the’re so many drinks at a bar or somthing like that. The’re usually at libraries or a hall.
Conclusion
Somtimes its really hard work to wright a book somtimes it’s great fun when your head is exploding with ideas!
The best thing about being an author is you get to be on a computer all day long.
